Daddy/Daughter Trip New York City

Several months ago, David and I decided to put together a special trip for just him and Maddie to celebrate her birthday.  We got creative and made a few adjustments to our budget to make it work financially, and started making plans for them to visit New York City.
Frommer's New York City with Kids was a terrific help in planning their visit.

They squeezed *alot* into 3 days!  Below are some highlights...

Toys R Us in Times Square boasts its own indoor ferris wheel!  Best for little kids, but fun nonetheless.

Lego replicas of NYC landmarks
 M&M's World!  Chocolate-lover's heaven!
Times Square...on a Monday night.  Crazy.
 FAO Schwartz Candy Section!
This is for my Indiana Jones Lego Wii fan!
Maddie and the FAO Schwartz Toy Soldier!
Lady Liberty
If you watch The Office faithfully, you get it.
The Apple Store on 5th Avenue!  Can you believe this glass structure?  You walk in and follow the stairs to the store below the street!  Cool!
Maddie trying out the Ipad2.  Don't get any ideas, my love.
Maddie loved the Eloise stories when she was little, so they stopped by The Plaza Hotel to check it out where Eloise "lived."

View of lower Manhattan and the Hudson River from the top of the Empire State Building.
St. Patrick's Cathedral
Open to tourists although Mass is being held regularly, as shown here.
They rented bikes in Central Park and biked the entire park!

Theater night!
Maddie loved Mary Poppins!  A great choice for a first-time theater visitor...Maddie knew the storyline and the music by heart, making it easy to follow and enjoy!
They spent a short time here and surprisingly, Maddie enjoyed it!  She immediately recognized Starry, Starry Night from art class at school!
The September 11 Memorial.  The long-awaited Memorial and Museum opens next month.
911memorial.org features these photos showing what will be unveiled in a few weeks.
The weight of the sorrow is clear, even to a ten-year-old girl.
David took a small gift for Maddie to give her while on their trip.  I searched high and low for something simple, unique, and special.  I found it at I Just Have to Have It out of my favorite Mississippi Magazine.

David gave Maddie the necklace plus a letter letting her know what a special trip this was and also words of encouragement to Maddie affirming her in how God has created her.  There is something about these words of affirmation coming from a daddy to his little girl that we pray will last long after the trip has ended.

I am so jealous! My mom and I went one year, the only time I've ever gone. What an amazing trip!

That's great that you took the family to such a great town for a fantabulous vacation. Only downer is that Times Square is just not like it used to be before its Disney makeover of 20 or so years ago.

What a fabulous trip! Hmmm...maybe going THERE to the American Girl store would be better than going to Chicago. Hmmm... :D And, a kid I used to babysit is in the ensemble for Mary Poppins (only he's not a kid any more!) How FUN!!!!!

Looks like a great trip. I went to NYC with choir in high school and it was lots of fun.

Amanda, I visited NYC with my Dad when I was 12 during the Thanksgiving holiday. We saw the Macy's parade, the Rockettes, a TV show and many other things. It didn't mean that much to me at the time but it sure does now. I'm sure David and Maddie had a great time and it will always be in her memory! How special! Luv, Mickey
