Decorating with Mason Jars is all over the blogworld! People are filling them with everything from epsom salt to candy corn!
I popped into Wal-Mart this weekend without kids…and if you’re like me, the standard for achieving a little bit of sanity is quite low…even Wal-Mart can do the trick. Anyhoo, I spied a set of Mason jars, and popped them in my basket. What a steal they are! About $10 for twelve jars! With so many possibilities for use, it’s a great investment of a few dollars.
My original plan was to fill a few jars with candy corn and battery-operated tea lights like I saw at Thrifty Decor Chick. So later in the week, we stopped by The Dollar Store, but when I got to the insanely long checkout line at and realized the lady in front of me had 102 very small items and I had two hungry kids in tow, we bailed on the candy corn. On to Plan B.
I put my “think-outside-the-box” hat on (which is against my nature, but blogging has been great therapy for), and looked through my overcrowded cabinets of decorative items. Score. I found a ginormous bag of coffee beans I had used a few years ago.
Immediately, I knew that the rustic look of the jars, the natural element of the coffee beans, and natural jute would be the perfect combo!
I originally placed a real tea light in the beans, but it did spill over a bit, so I switched to battery-operated tea lights. These lights are found in the candle section of Wal-Mart or any craft store.
If you prefer real candles, you will need a small glass votive to house the tea light. This is a great option for filling your kitchen or dining area with the aroma of coffee, too, as it “warms” the beans.
I will most likely move these around, but I love having one near my coffee station!
These coffee-filled jars are great grouped together to display in your kitchen or for use as part of a centerpiece for a rustic fall table!
For reference, I believe I purchased the 42-oz bag of coffee beans…the cheapest I could find. The jute is at any craft store.

I love this idea….the colors of the beans & jute in the mason jar are such a great combo.
I would love to use candy corn as you mentioned a lot of people are doing, but I’ve learned my lesson – they seem to disappear with all the sweet tooths around here!

My goodness – thank you so much for this! I just moved into my first house, and was looking for decorating ideas. The floors in my house are wood, and the walls are this really pretty soft yellow color that remind me of cake batter. So I wanted my theme for the living room to be “coffee and cake”, and this added touch just fits so perfectly. The best part about it? I already had everything I needed to make it, and even if I didn’t, it wouldn’t cost me that much. Thanks again for sharing!
